Building Houston’s Future with Innovative Concrete Solutions
Bomanite Houston was selected to contribute to the major redesign of Rice University’s campus quad, a central gathering space for students. This large-scale project encompassed 40,000 SF of decorative concrete, divided into three distinct types to meet both functional and aesthetic needs:
Type 1: A cream integral color was used, with decorative aggregates mixed into the concrete and also seeded onto the surface. This technique adds depth and texture, creating an elegant, natural-looking finish that complements the quad’s environment.
Type 2 & 3: These sections feature a blend of Cream and Sonora Tan color hardeners, combined with three different types of decorative aggregates. All surfaces were exposed using a sandblast method, revealing the intricate details of the aggregates and adding visual interest to the space.
This project not only provides a beautiful, cohesive design but also ensures that the quad is durable enough to handle heavy foot traffic. The concrete’s combination of strength and aesthetic appeal makes the new quad a vibrant, lasting centerpiece for Rice University’s campus, reflecting both the institution’s heritage and its modern vision for communal spaces.
